Neither Masika’s centre nor this website are a registered charity or NGO. This blog was set up by an individual who wanted to create a forum for sharing information about Masika and her work.

Independent filmmaker and photojournalist Fiona Lloyd-Davies has been reporting on the issue of rape in the Congo since 2001. In 2009 whilst working on a film project in the DRC, Fiona was told about Masika and the centre she runs for rape victims. Fiona was inspired by Masika’s story and soon saw for herself the essential work that she does in difficult conditions.

The women and children at the centre live a hand-to-mouth existence. They work in the field to feed themselves, or carry heavy loads for other producers for a few dollars or a couple of potatoes. Because so many of the women at the centre have been ostracised by their family, the centre is their only hope of survival. Men, women and children are arriving there every week.

Raising awareness about the situation in Congo is an important task, and this blog aims in part to do just that. However, education is only part of the solution. Ultimately, without a regular income, Masika will never be certain that her work at the centre can continue.The only way to ensure a stable future for the centre is by securing more donations and regular funding.

If every person who had viewed Fiona’s film ‘Field of Hope’ on Youtube by the time this was written gave $10 to Masika, she would have well over $40,000 by now. A micro loan of only $250 from Oxfam helped to establish the centre in its early stages. Any amount of money that you are able to donate can, and will, make a very real difference to the life of women in the DRC.
